The Benefits of Multi-Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid in Private Label Cosmeceutical Skincare

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a powerhouse humectant in skincare, renowned for its ability to bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water. In modern cosmeceuticals, formulators increasingly combine multiple molecular weights of HA—high, medium, low, and ultra-low—to deliver layered, comprehensive hydration that outperforms single-weight formulas. This multi-weight approach addresses different skin layers simultaneously, enhancing immediate and long-term benefits while supporting barrier function and anti-aging effects.

High Molecular Weight HA (typically >1,000 kDa) forms a breathable, protective film on the skin's surface (stratum corneum). It excels at reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), providing instant plumping, smoothing fine lines, and soothing dry or sensitive skin. This surface-level action delivers immediate dewy radiance and helps shield the skin from environmental dehydration, making it ideal for creams, masks, and products targeting barrier repair.

Medium Molecular Weight HA (roughly 100–1,000 kDa) penetrates the upper epidermis, offering balanced hydration. It supports skin softness, elasticity, and texture while maintaining moisture between corneocytes. This weight class bridges surface protection and deeper delivery, improving overall suppleness and helping sustain hydration throughout the day. It is versatile and suitable for most skin types.

Low Molecular Weight HA (roughly 10–100 kDa) delves deeper into the epidermis, delivering prolonged hydration, plumping from within, and supporting collagen and elastin production. It contributes to visible firmness, wrinkle reduction, and improved resilience over time. Clinical studies show combinations including low MW HA significantly boost hydration and elasticity compared to single forms.

Ultra-Low Molecular Weight HA (<10 kDa, sometimes called nano or oligomeric HA) offers the deepest penetration, potentially reaching the dermis or viable epidermis. It can stimulate fibroblasts, enhance skin repair, and provide intensive anti-aging benefits like boosted elasticity and reduced fine lines. Ultra-low MW HA (especially <20 kDa) however may act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in compromised or sensitive skin, potentially triggering pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α or IL-6 leading to skin inflammation which is exactly what we are trying to prevent. Even though the risk is higher on barrier-damaged skin we decided it is safest to avoid using ultra low HA and stick to a molecular weight higher than 20 kDa to ensure we are not potentially generating any inflammatory responses which can accelerate the skin aging process.

HA Complex used at PLC

The synergy of multi-molecular weight HA creates a "3D moisture matrix." High MW locks in surface moisture, medium sustains mid-layers, and low/ultra-low replenish deeper structures. A notable 2011 study using five different MWs (50–2,000 kDa) demonstrated significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity after 60 days. Multi-weight formulas achieve superior TEWL reduction and longer-lasting effects than single-weight versions.

Here at PLC we use a HA complex that contains high, medium and low molecular weights HA ranging from 20 – 1,800 kDa to deliver transformative results: deeper, longer-lasting hydration, plumper appearance, improved barrier function, and visible anti-aging benefits. This science-backed strategy makes it a staple for hydrated, resilient skin across ages and types.
